Monday 5 May, 12.30pm at The George Inn, Longbridge Deverill
Alto saxophonist Nick Sorensen and world class pianist John Law will be joined by Yuri Goloubev, one of the world's best double bass players, to perform some original compositions and arrangements alongside familiar jazz standards.
Nick Sorensen In recent years Nick has performed with Tony Roberts, Ray d’Inverno, Rod Paton, Jason Rebello, David Newton, Karen Street and Pee Wee Ellis (with whom he has written a book called ‘Passing It On’). He is featured on Emma Harris’s ‘Love Life’ CD and Pat Thomas’s ‘Four Compositions for Orchestra’ with the Oxford Improvisers. His latest project, ‘The Vespertine Quartet’, specializes in devising performances for parish churches. Active as a concert performer and workshop leader, Nick Sorensen is a charismatic musician.
John Law started out as classical musician, doing his first public performances at the age of six and soon he received encouragement from legendary pianist Alfred Brandel. But a career as a classical concert pianist was interrupted in 1986 when he turned to jazz. Since then, Law has worked with a vast range of musicians from saxophonists Evan Parker and Jon Lloyd to drummers Louis Moholo-Moholo and Asaf Sirkis. Musically, he has covered genres from free jazz and bop to modern composition, working in several formations: solo, duo, trio, quartet and large ensemble. The musical partnership with Nick Sorensen began in 2006; 'their practised sparring and relaxed candour in one another's company shine through' (Jazzwise magazine).
Yuri Goloubev An artist like Yuri Goloubev is a true rarity and exception in the music world. Getting his first acclaims performing at the world’s most important venues for many years with the likes of Rostropovich and Bashmet, Galway and Quasthoff and recording for such labels as EMI and Sony Classical (including a Grammy nominated album), in 2004 he moved to Milan to devote himself fully to jazz music, reaching the same top level in this genre performing at various important festivals such as Umbria Jazz, Montreux Jazz Festival, North Sea Jazz, London Jazz Festival and many more. Yuri Goloubev is currently the ACT recording artist.
